Reading what excellent dissertations look like in your department before you begin writing gives you a concrete model to aim for that is more useful than any abstract description of quality.

Pace yourself.
A dissertation is a long project with many moving parts, and without a realistic writing schedule it's very easy to fall behind in ways that are hard to recover from. The good news is that planning a writing schedule isn't complicated. What it requires is honesty about how much time you actually have, realism about how quickly you can write and revise, and willingness to build in contingency for the unexpected.
Vary sentence length. Mix long and short. Rhythm matters. Academic writing does not mean uniform, medium-length sentences throughout every paragraph; varying sentence length deliberately creates a rhythm that makes your writing easier and more engaging to read while also reducing the mechanical quality that uniform structures produce.
How long does a dissertation actually take to write? It depends on the length, the subject, and your prior experience with extended writing projects. As a very rough guide, many students at master's level find that the writing phase alone takes three to four months if they're writing alongside other commitments. If you're writing full-time, you might complete a draft in six to eight weeks, though revision will add considerably to this.
The mistake most students make in planning is to underestimate the time needed for revision. First drafts are always rougher than you imagine they'll be when you're planning, and turning a rough first draft into a submission-ready final document takes longer than most students expect. Building at least two weeks of revision time into your schedule for each chapter, and several weeks for the final pass through the whole document, will protect you from the panic of a last-minute rush.
State your position clearly.
Working backwards from your submission deadline is the most reliable way to construct a schedule that actually holds. Identify the date your dissertation needs to be submitted. Then work backwards through the key milestones: final proofreading, complete revision of all chapters, first full draft complete, all data collected and analysed, literature review drafted, and so on. This approach forces you to confront whether your plan is actually feasible within your timeframe.
Daily word count targets can be useful motivators, but they need to be treated as minimums rather than maximums and as averages rather than rigid daily requirements. A target of five hundred words per day will get you through a thirty-thousand word dissertation in sixty days of writing, but there will be days when you write three thousand words and days when you write nothing productive. What matters is the overall rate, not whether you hit exactly five hundred words on any given Tuesday.
Protecting your writing time is one of the most important things you can do for your dissertation progress. This means setting aside specific blocks of time in your calendar that are dedicated to dissertation work and treating those blocks as non-negotiable in the way you'd treat a lecture or a job commitment. Writing is easy to defer because it has no fixed time in your schedule, and the psychological cost of that deferral accumulates in ways that make it harder and harder to start.
Check your word count regularly.
Be specific. Generalities weaken arguments. Precision strengthens them. The degree of specificity you bring to your claims, your evidence, and your analysis is often the single most important determinant of whether your examiners perceive your work as genuinely analytical or merely descriptive.
Accountability structures help many students maintain momentum. Writing groups, peer accountability pairs, regular supervisor meetings where you report on progress, or even just telling a friend or family member what you plan to have finished by a given date, all create a degree of social accountability that makes it more difficult to procrastinate without consequence. You don't need all of these; even one can make a considerable difference.
Good methodology is justified methodology, where every decision you have made is explained and situated within methodological debates in your field.
Good writing takes practice.
Sources conflict. Deal with it. The disagreement between sources is not a problem to hide but a resource to exploit, because explaining why scholars disagree and where you stand in that debate is exactly the kind of critical analysis that markers are looking for. A literature review that pretends all sources agree is less intellectually credible than one that acknowledges genuine dispute.
The students who make the most of the supervision process are those who arrive at each meeting having already done considerable work on the problem they want to discuss, because supervisors are far better placed to help with specific, concrete difficulties than with the general sense that something is not working.
