Leveraging Big Data and IoT for Smart City Transformation

Introduction

It is also necessary to determine the contribution of IoT and data sharing on the applied sustainability prospects of any such city in terms of resource (time and energy) and space efficiency.

In this context, the future research process would entail the utilisation of the processes IoT and Big Data in development of sustainable smart cities through which built environments, urban spaces, infrastructures, buildings and mobility in transportation could be managed properly so that the urban economic value could be maximized.

The rationale of the study could be understood as the development of proper understanding regarding the process of transforming a city into a Smart City based urban landscape (geomarketing.com, 2018). The factor of efficient resource management is one of the explanations. The UN has observed that 54% of the global populace resides in the city and this measure is forecasted to reach 66% by the year 2050 (designblendz.com, 2020). Thus, the identified research gaps have been relative paucity of research in the measures of determination of contribution of smart city designs in marketing and development of consumer perception, the details of development of sustainability through smart technological and urban space design solutions which could further delineate the impact of smart technology implementation on consumer behaviour and the living quality improvement of the smart city dwellers in terms of smart management space, time and energy (archdaily.com, 2014). To this effect, the research questions would be developed on the basis of such research knowledge development perspectives.

To ascertain contribution of smart city based facilities in management of consumer behaviour, especially that of the new generation, through digital marketing.

To discern the benefits of smart cities in terms of energy, time and resource efficiency.

How does Smart City designing process influence the designing and development of smart urban spaces involving engagement, flexibility, communication, aesthetics and technological adaptive innovation?

How does smart building development contribute in the sustainable element of smart cities?

Research Philosophy

The research process would utilise the positivist research philosophy to logically analyse the collected data concerning the research problem under consideration. The rationale for selecting this research philosophy is that Positivism permits a methodical structural framework for analysis of collected data through which lower space of research error incurrence could become possible. Positivism could as well foster lesser affinity for research variables and this could assist the researcher in executing data collection and analysis with greater accuracy

Research Approach

The research process would utilise the Deductive approach through a bottom-approach to validate research hypotheses on the basis of existing theoretical constructs to establish research conclusions authentically. Furthermore, this approach could as well foster time efficiency.

Research Design

The research process would be utilising exploratory research design for the purpose of connecting the existing ideas to the data analysis conclusions to specifically develop understanding about the extent and nature of the research problem under consideration.

Research Strategy

The research strategy would involve the application of survey based data collection methods. The rationale of selecting the survey strategy is the convenience through it appropriate attributes based data could be collected from specifically selected research participants.

Sampling Method

The research would be utilising probability based random sampling method to select a predetermined number of participants from the municipal council of the Smart City of Dubai(5 personnel) and from the leading IT and digitisation service provider organisations for the city council of Dubai for collection of Quantitative data through formulation of structured and semi-regulatory questionnaire. The respondents would be selected through a stratified random sampling method which would specify the research participant involvement through first formulation of mutually exclusive groups of respondents and then utilising random sampling methods to select the necessary respondents.

Data collection and analysis method

The questionnaire formulated for this purpose would be utilised to garner research information from the research participants in the manner of direct responses to presented questions. The generated data would be structured through the Likert Five Point scale data demonstration statistical table and the analysis would involve utilisation of relevant visualisation tools such as graphs and charts to properly outline the data analysis trends. Statistical regression analysis would be performed to outline the data variation measures to properly test the validity of the research questions in terms of these being reflected in the Primary data conclusions.

Apart from this, the Secondary data would be collected through the previously published research sources such as relevant books and journals, online data repositories and previously performed thesis content on the research topic under consideration. The analysis of secondary data would entail utilisation of thematic similarity analysis of the observed data thematic trends with the research objectives/ questions.

Prior consent from the research participants would be garnered through provisioning of advance notices and explanations of the purpose and objectives of the research study in the form of consent forms. Furthermore, the Researcher would also accord complete liberty to the research participants to withdraw their consents from the research participation process at any moment of their choice or to refrain from providing answers to the presented questions. The Researcher would also ensure that complete anonymity would be maintained regarding the personal details of the participants and not such detail would be published to any third party without explicit permission from the concerned participants.
