You're sitting at your desk and you can't breathe. The entire dissertation looms in front of you. Six chapters. Thousands of citations. Months of work. It's too much. You look at chapter one and immediately think about chapters two through six, and your brain just shuts down. You open a document. You stare at blank space. You close the document. You can't do this. It's too big. You're overwhelmed.

The process of narrowing your research topic from a broad area of interest to a specific and answerable question is one of the earliest and most important decisions you will make during your dissertation journey.

This is normal. Most dissertation students feel this at some point. Some feel it constantly. But overwhelm is a signal that you need to change your approach, not that you can't do the work.

Stop thinking about your entire dissertation. Think about this week.

What's due this week? Maybe nothing. But what's your only task for this week? Maybe it's drafting section 3.2 of chapter two. That's it. Not chapter two. Not chapters one and two. Just section 3.2.

How many words is section 3.2? Maybe 800 words. That's your task. Eight hundred words this week. You can write 800 words. This is not overwhelming.

Every week, you have a different micro-task. Week one: draft section 2.1 (500 words). Week two: draft section 2.2 (800 words). Week three: draft section 2.3 (600 words). By week twelve, chapter two is drafted.

This method breaks the overwhelming task into manageable pieces. You never think about the whole dissertation. You think about this week's 700 words.

The quality of your argument in each chapter of the dissertation depends on how carefully you have thought through the logical connections between your evidence, your interpretation of that evidence, and the conclusions you draw.

Interdisciplinary research, which draws on concepts, theories, and methods from more than one academic discipline, can produce particularly rich and new perspectives on complex research problems that do not fit neatly within any single field. Students undertaking interdisciplinary dissertations need to demonstrate not only competence in the methods of their home discipline but also a genuine understanding of the theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches borrowed from other fields. Chapter two: Literature Review (3,000 words)

Continue for all chapters. Now you have thirty to forty sections instead of six chapters. Each section is 500-1,000 words. Suddenly the task is not overwhelming. It's a series of small, achievable tasks.
