The term "conceptual framework" is used inconsistently. Some academics use it interchangeably with "theoretical framework". Others distinguish them carefully. The inconsistency confuses students.

Your framework answers several questions. What are the key variables or concepts in your study? How do they relate? What are you assuming about these relationships? Are there other factors that might affect these relationships?

Conceptual vs Theoretical Frameworks

A theoretical framework applies existing theory to your question. If you're using attachment theory to understand how parents bond with newborns, you're using a theoretical framework. Attachment theory already exists. You're applying it.

A conceptual framework develops a model specific to your study. It may draw on theory, but it's adapted or created for your particular investigation. You've created this model based on literature and your research question.

The distinction matters because theoretical frameworks come with established credibility. Attachment theory is established. Applying it is credible. Conceptual frameworks are novel. Developing one requires careful justification.

Each framework is specific to the research question. There's no universal framework. Your framework is designed for your study.

Where the Conceptual Framework Sits in Your Dissertation

Typically, the conceptual framework appears in the methodology chapter. You've reviewed literature. You've identified what's known and what's unclear. Your framework articulates how you'll investigate the unclear area.

Some dissertations have a standalone chapter for the conceptual framework, positioned between literature review and methodology. This works if your framework is complex or novel and deserves extended discussion.

Include a visual representation. Include a written explanation of the framework, defining each concept and explaining hypothesised relationships.

How to Develop Your Own Conceptual Framework

Start with your research question. What are the key concepts? If your question is "How does peer support affect adaptation to chronic illness?" your concepts are peer support and adaptation to chronic illness. What other factors might be relevant? Illness severity? Existing social networks? These become part of your framework.

Review literature carefully. What relationships have been established? What's contested? If research shows that social support affects psychological adaptation but the specific mechanisms are unclear, your framework clarifies mechanisms.

Draw on existing theory if relevant. If attribution theory helps explain your phenomenon, incorporate it. If no existing theory applies, you're developing a novel framework.

Create a visual representation. What goes in boxes? What are the arrows? What are moderating variables?

Write it clearly. "This framework proposes that peer support affects adaptation through three pathways: practical assistance, emotional validation, and sense of community. These pathways operate differently depending on illness severity and existing social networks."

Justify it. Why these relationships? Why these concepts? Where does this framework come from?

A well-developed conceptual framework shows that you've thought carefully about your research question and what might matter in investigating it. It's not decoration. It's the architecture of your study.
