Introduction

Managing Health and Safety in the workplace is necessary for all the health and social care providers so that it is possible to manage security in the hospitals or private nursing homes and provide the best quality care to the patients (Mirowsky, 2017). The aim of the study is to analyse the health and safety in the workplace and existing policies and practices which are necessary for maintaining the quality standard of the health and social care service. Through this study, it is also easy to demonstrate the impacts of managing health and safety in the health care organisations on the patient’s safety and security. Moreover, the risk assessment planning and developing effective care planning for the residents also can be evaluated in this study by reviewing patient’s safety and fulfilling the needs of the residents. In this study, evaluating the internal environment of Vista Residential Care home which is situated in the London Borough of Hillington. The main issue in this residential care home is related to hygiene where the residents cannot get proper service and safety in the home due to unhygienic place inside the home. In this care home, there are 40 residents and 50% of them is suffering from dementia. Unhygienic place, lack of monitoring and reviewing the internal environment of the care home and inefficient staff members are the major issues in the care home where the staff members fail to provide quality health and social care to the residents.

It is necessary for the health and social care managers to implement the Health and safety at Work Act 1974 which indicates that it is the responsibility of the employer to manage the staff members and employees in the workplace by providing safety and security to the employees (Aveyard, 2014). In this regard, the management team of Vista Residential Care home needs to implement Health and Safety at Workplace 1974 in order to manage the residents in the floor and provide them neat and clean place to stay safe and secure. Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and Health and Safety Regulations 1981 are also effective to develop effective practice and procedure to save the residents and provide them effective social care service and safe environment to live. Additionally, The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulation 1992 and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 are also beneficial to maintain the residential care home, Vista Residential where the residents can get safe place to live longer. the main issue of the Vista Residential Care home is related to lack of neat and clean and poor health and social care management and it is necessary for the residential care home to manage the workplace and provide efficient service to the residents. The employees need to follow the legislative process and practice in the workplace so that it is able to maintain safety and security in the residential care home and provide the residents the best possible care (Cameron et al., 2014). In this regard, the information related to the legislative procedure and practices in the workplace need to be discussed with other staff members. It is the responsibility of the managers to arrange effective training and development program as well as group discussion so that it is easy to share effective information with the staff members.

Assessing the responsibilities in a specific health and social care work place for the management of health and safety

The employers of the health and social care sector play a crucial role in managing safety and security of the employees, staff members, patients and residents. It is the responsibility to the employers to provide safe place of employment where the employees can feel safe and secured to work with others and provide the best possible social care service and support to the residents of the Vista Residential Care home. In addition to these, safe working practice and suitable internal environment are necessary for the employees to work efficiently and manage the residents successfully (Glasby and Dickinson, 2014). However, there is a serious unhygienic issue for which the residents as well as the employees do not feel safe to stay. The employers make ensure that the working atmosphere is safe and secure for the employees and the management team need to make sure that there is proper policy to control dust, fumes and noise levels. However, in the Vista Residential Care home there is management issue where the employees and management team did not review and inspect the floor where the residents are living. It is the responsibility of the employers and management team to keep record of the accidents in the floor of the Vista Residential Care home and review the internal environment successfully so that the existing issues of lack of cleanliness can be managed well. Monitoring the floor and acknowledging the patient’s requirements are also the responsibility of the employers where it is necessary for the employers to manage the needs and preferences of the residents in the Vista Residential Care home.

Analysing health and safety priorities appropriate for a specific health and social care work place

There are proper procedure and practice through which the managers try to analyse health and safety priorities for providing the best possible social care and support to the patients (Dickinson and O'Flynn, 2016). It is necessary to keep all the safety requirements and handle the operational activities in the Vista residential care home efficiently by reviewing the process and inspecting the whole matter in the care home. The main safety issue in the Vista Residential Care home is related to hygiene where the staff members and management team fail to manage hygienic factor sin the care home and this further creates the issue of the residents who stay in the Vista Residential Care home. In this regard, the management team of the Vista Residential Care home needs to manage the safety measures by keeping the floor neat and clean. Risk assessment planning of the Vista Residential Care home is effective through which it is possible to demonstrate the risk factors in the care home for which the residents are suffering daily (Yazdani et al., 2015). there are three main areas where the Care Quality Commission (CQC) focus which are health and safety management, poor provision of food and drinks and poor quality of toilet where the water temperature cannot be controlled. Through the risk assessment planning, it is possible to identify the hazardous taken place in the Vista Residential Care home and it has been found that the management team of the care home fail to manage the safety and security of the residents. The purpose of this risk assessment planning is important to identify the existing issue sin the Vista Residential Care home and implement effective precautions through which it is possible to manage the residents and deliver quality care to the residents.

The purpose of this care planning is to meet the needs and preferences of the residents of the in the Vista Residential Care home where the management team members can ensure safety and security of the residents (Haas and Yorio, 2016). The principle of good health and social care practice as well as promoting resident’s priorities and needs can be enhanced through the risk assessment planning where the management team can deliver quality service and secure place to the residents to stay safely.

The main aspect of the Vista Residential Care home is to provide quality food and maintain hygiene factors on the floor as it provides a scope to the care home to maintain safety and security for the residents in long run (Griffith and Howarth, 2014). It has crucial impacts on the residents where the management team can maximise the standard of living condition of the residents where they can stay in a neat and clean place as well as can get better quality food and drinks (Mohammadfam et al., 2016). It has also significant impact on the customers as they can stay in the Vista Residential Care home safely and they can maximise their basic needs such as foods and shelter. Moreover, the aspect of maintaining food safety and hygiene is also beneficial for the Vista Residential Care home to manage the customers or residents and retain more new residents in the care home. It is hereby beneficial for the Vista Residential Care home to manage the customers and provide positive atmosphere to live longer with safety and security.

Discussing how dilemmas encountered in relation to implementing systems and policies for health, safety and security may be addressed

in implementing the strategy of food safety and maintaining hygienic factors in the Vista Residential Care home, the major dilemmas are such as poor communication, inefficiency of the staff members, resource allocation and non-cooperation. These are the major dilemmas for which it is quite difficult for the management team of the Vista Residential Care home to maintain food safety and hygienic factors in the Vista Residential Care home. The management team also faces issue related to new updated technology such as implementation of CCTV, fire extinguisher and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) through which it is possible to monitor the place regularly. There can be raised the issue of resistance to change and internal conflicts and the existing staff members may be uncomfortable to accept the new changes in the workplace. Poor communication is another dilemma for which the planning of managing food safety and hygienic factors on the floor of Vista Residential Care home may be hampered.

Analysing the effects of non-compliance with health and safety legislation in a health and social care work place

Non-compliance issue arises during low awareness of the management team and the poor regulatory control for which the service users are suffering and in the present case study, due to low employee morale and poor management of the team members in the Vista Residential Care home, the residents are suffering a lot for hygienic issue and poor food quality. In this context, non-compliance arises due to poor exchange of information and lack of maintaining employee morale and poor transparency where the employees cannot keep the record about the necessities of the residents and they fail to fulfil the requirements of the residents. There are significant impacts of the issue of non-compliance for which the residents are suffering a lot and they cannot stay safe in the care home (Mohammadfam et al., 2017). Lack of management in the Exchange of information and maintaining compliance and transparency are also necessary where the employees try to keep record about the necessities of the residents and fulfil the requirements of the residents. Hereby, there is legislative requirements in the Vista Residential Care home where the management team need to communicate the legislative structures and procedures in the residential care home, Vista. Low employee’s morale and poor performance of the staff members directly affect the quality of health and social care in the care home negatively as it further deteriorates the reputation of the care home. It is also possible to enhance internal communication through implementing Information and Communication Technology which helps the employees to discuss their issues and the practices related to the health and safety policies (Battaglia, Passetti and Frey, 2015). On the other hand, the management team of the Vista Residential Care home can inspect the workplace and monitor the internal environment the daily basis which is also effective to review the existing health and safety policies and practices in the Vista Residential Care home.

Analysing the effectiveness of health and safety policies and practices in the workplace in promoting a positive health and safety culture

The practice of managing health and safety in the Vista Residential Care home is effective for promoting positive culture for all the stakeholders including the staff members, employees, managers, organisational representatives, senior board members of the Vista Residential Care home and shareholders. Positive health and safety culture in the Vista Residential Care home is beneficial for the organisational level where the managers can meet the requirements of the residents and provide them safe food and drink as well as secured place to stay. This is also advantageous for the Vista Residential Care home to manage the residents and maximise their standard of living by delivering safe and secured place as well as meeting the basic needs of the individuals which are food and shelter. Additionally, the managers of the Vista Residential Care home play a crucial role in motivating the employees and providing them training for implementing the policies and practices related to the health and safety. Shared responsibility, team oriented working environment and positive working culture are contributing factors in promoting health and safety in the Vista Residential Care home through which it is possible for the care home to support safety ad security and maximise the standard of living of the residents.

Evaluating own contribution to placing the health and safety needs of individuals at the Centre of practice

As a health and social care workers, it is my responsibility to work collaboratively and promote health and safety to the Vista Residential Care home. Maintaining compliance and transparency in the workplace as well as accountability are my duty as health care professionals where the main responsibility is to serve better care and support to the residents by delivering them safe food and secured place to stay longer. I try to enhance positive working culture by improving internal communication and improving cooperation with their team members where I try to share y feedback and develop effective decision to serve the residents of the Vista Residential Care home. I try to attend the training and development program to acknowledge the safe standard of the Care Quality commission and the tactics through which it is possible for me to support the residents and meet their requirements of safe food and drinks and neat and clean place to stay.

Conclusion

It can be concluded that, health and safety policies and practices are important trough which it is possible to serve better care and clean place to the residents of the Vista Residential Care home. The management team of the Vista Residential Care home play a crucial role in monitoring the place and develop effective strategy to make the place can and deliver quality food for maximising the standard of living of the individuals staying in the care home. Through managing health and safety in the workplace, it is possible for the Vista Residential Care home to meet the needs and preferences of the residents and improve the standard of health and social care that the Vista Residential Care home provide.
