I find great wisdom in the words: “Justice lies in the hands of the people” and “Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere.” As an optimistic and passionate individual, I am determined to be a lawyer in order to contribute to society and to improve the lives and well-being of those around me. When I was a child, I witnessed a couple of riots and demonstrations that usually involved multitudes of people passing through the streets along which my house is located. Being quite young then, my mother explained to me that these riots and demonstrations were one of the most viable ways through which people could protest against the many instances of social inequality and injustice they perceived in the system. This way, citizens were able to voice their concerns and opinions, and to demand for justice and equality. As a result, I tried to imagine ways through which the system could be changed in order to ensure that everyone felt equal and perceived a sense of justice in all spheres of life. When I asked her how best the system could be changed, my mother told me that would be- as it has always been- a tall order, although joining the legal fraternity would be a significant step toward the same. This, she said, would enable me undertake actions and, based on circumstances and my position, make and hand down decisions that contribute to the promotion of social justice and equality and upholding of human rights. This gave rise to my unwavering dedication to become a lawyer and forms the foundation of my greatest ambition as a lawyer.
My dedication can be evidenced by my integrity, hard work, reliability and strong work ethic, which I have constantly demonstrated in my previous work and other undertakings. I am originally from a science background, having studied applied sciences in order to become an audiologist. Given that I am profoundly deaf, a condition I have had since birth, and which has made it necessary for me to wear cochlear implants, I must say that it has taken me a lot of determination, a passion to succeed and hard work to get to where I am today. Working in hospitals as an audiologist equipped me with valuable work experience and enabled me to respectfully communicate with the patients and to develop solid relationships based on trust with them and their families in order to offer them quality and compassionate care and service. Interacting with deaf people and working with the deaf community, along with my own experience as a profoundly deaf individual, I came to appreciate the challenges that deaf people routinely face, especially with regard to their access to services. These experiences have taught me the significance of free quality healthcare for the deaf, as well as other underprivileged sections. Studying law, therefore, would provide me with the opportunity to advocate for deaf people and to help them easily access the multiple services that they currently encounter difficulty accessing.
My participation in various organizational and volunteer engagements, including as a cadet in the Royal Air Force (RAF) has enabled me to appreciate the value of volunteerism, demonstrate my leadership and teamwork skills, as well as enhance my medical training. Joining the Citizens Advice Bureau, a civil rights movement, and following my engagements studying the legal system, I have been able to develop knowledge and acquire practical experience in public issues and advising people on important matters, including housing, employment, benefits, debts, and so on. These, I believe are pertinent life issues for all individuals in society, and which play a vital role in promoting social equality and justice.
As a lawyer, I would take it upon myself to enhance the great strengths while minimizing the glaring weaknesses of our legal system, to champion for equality, and fight for what is fair. It is for this reason that I seek to study LLB, through which I will develop a broad knowledge base and understanding of the world and the application of law. Studying law would also contribute to more deeply appreciate society and life, and be a stepping stone in my quest to promote justice and equality for all. I believe that my attributes of hard work, passion and dedication suitably qualify me for the program, whose expectations I look forward to exceeding.
