Personal and Academic Development in nursing

Introduction

The reflective assessment is one of the effect way to review own skill and capabilities for further personal and professional development (DeCoux, 2016). It is beneficial for the individuals, working in the nursing care and health department to review own technical skill, nursing knowledge and other professional skill set for reviewing their experience and creating future skill development planning to achieve career growth. The study focuses on analysing Gibb’s reflective model for discussing own skill and abilities, where the individuals would like to evaluate own interview transcript for better understanding about own skill and abilities. It further provides a scope to the individual to develop further personal and professional planning so that it is possible to achieve higher in the health and social care sector.

Gibb’s reflective cycle

Gibb’s reflective model is important to evaluate own skill and abilities and as per the model, there are several steps which are description, feeling, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan (Hill, 2017).

Description

Description is the first stage, in which the individual can share the experience, gathered throughout the professional career (Sarmasoglu, Dinç and Elçin, 2016). The individual can review own performance and skill set that are helpful in achieving the job role in the nursing care and management (Mulvogue, Ryan and Cesare, 2019). As per my experience, I am able to handle the patients in health and social care institution, where as a nurse, it is my responsibility to take care of the patients and fulfil their needs and preferences. I also try to manage the patients with dignity and respect, where I focus on utilising own skill in nursing practice and management. I try to utilise the examples in the care home as well as use own knowledge about nursing care and management, so that it would be possible for me to treat the patients with quality care and services. I tried my level best to provide medicines to the patients timely, as well as provide continuous support to them for care and management, so that the patients can feel safe to stay in the hospital.

Feeling

Feeling is the second stage of reflecting own skill and abilities after gathering the experience at the workplace in nursing care and management (Young and Seibenhener, 2018). I am interested in patient care and management, where I am looking forward to provide the best quality care to the patient. Digital skill and time management practice are the major strengths where I try handle the patients efficiently within effective time and roved continuous support as per their health needs and personal preferences. Digital skills are useful in the workplace, which provides a scope to manage the patients efficiently (Waxman et al., 2019). On the other hand, I am punctual in the workplace and time management skill is good which is also helpful for me to manage the patients timely. Smart dress and positive behaviour are also useful, where I try to be neat and clean and maintain hygiene factors at the care home so that I can provide the best quality care and support to all the patients.

Evaluation

There are difficulties in being maintaining relevancy and providing creative decision or solutions to the care home (Mulvogue, Ryan and Cesare, 2019). In this regard, I think that, it is mandatory for me to improve my capabilities in making good decision for the patients. Additionally, communication skill is required where I try to improve my interactive skill and performance in long run. Throughout the experience, I also try to improve the activities for facilitating conversation in the team and enhance team work so that it is possible for me to maximise my skill set.

Analysis

Analysis is the next stage, where it is easy to generate concept about strength and weakness of the individual in working in the nursing care and management (Rasouli and Namnabati, 2019). As per the evaluation of the skill set, I come to know that, I am able to apply the nursing theories and knowledge and nursing and health care management to treat the patients, however, I need to improve my problem solving and decision making skill, so that I can lead my colleagues and achieve future success by developing successful care plan for the patients.

Conclusion

The IT skill and management practice are also strong, as these are my strengths, where I also try to manage the database of the patient through digital entry and integrated computerised system. As per the skill evaluation, I try to improve my communication skill, so that it would be possible to enhance conversation among the team members and maximise the performance of the team at the organisation. For further skill enhancement, it is mandatory for me to improve my communication skill, where I would like to interact with other colleagues, and enhance conversation among the team members.

Action plan

I also focus on developing team work through cooperation and partnership working practice. I would also like to improve emotional intelligence and leadership skill, so that I can lead the other colleagues at the workplace and apply any nursing care knowledge and professional skills for fulfilling the job role and responsibilities. Through communication skill enhancement, as well as maximising the problem solving and decision making skill, I would be able to achieve higher in the nursing care and management.

Conclusion

The reflective assessment is effective where I try to evaluate my own skill and abilities. I come to know that, I am able to apply the nursing knowledge and practice in treating the patients and maximising the wellbeing of the individuals. I am also efficient in dressing up, time management, maintaining cleanliness and managing the patients successfully. I am also able to utilising my IT skills. For further skill development, I would like to maximise my communication skill, team development and management practice and problem solving skill for exploring new creating strategies to deliver high quality nursing care.
