Pursuing a Career in Mental Health

Personal Statement

I aspire to study mental health at university and become a fully qualified Nurse in the future. I became fascinated with the nursing profession when I started working with the national health service (NHS) in the United Kingdom. After working for NHS for a very long time, I choose to study something more meaningful, challenging and interesting in my career. The humanity and devotion of mental health nurses who go further than just treating mental patients, but wanting to make them happy and as comfortable as possible in stressed period is truly inspiring. This is the key reason I am passionately inspired to pursue this field of study at your institution.

After completing Adult English and Maths at Milton Keynes college 2016, I decided that getting a qualification to becoming a mental health nurse is my ultimate goal. For the past 11 years, I have been working for the NHS trust which has high level courageous and dedicated nurses, doctors and health care assistant. This has given me the desire and courage to study this subject. Currently, I work in the mental health environment as a House Keeper, where I provide the same level of care to patients similar to that of nurses and Health Care Assistant in the wards.

From my academic and training history, I have been trained in various courses such as Health and Safety, Manual Handling, COSHH, Dementia Awareness among others. These courses have made me realize that nursing is not only a profession but also a way of life, which involves life-long learning. Additionally, I come to realize that understanding the needs of patients requires dedication, excellent communication skills, intuition as well as the ability to play sensitively with patients which I believe am excellent in.

From my work, at NHS I have gained experience and skills which I believe will be helpful to me in this field of study as well as in the future. For instance, I assist nurses and health care assistant in the words with patient care. Moreover, I have experience in dealing with service users of the NHS. From my work at NHS, I gained several skills such as compassion, communication skills, confidence, critical thinking, and ethics. All this makes me the most qualified candidate for this field of study. Nevertheless, my current studies at Milton Keynes College (Access to Health Science), is also related to mental health nursing. Fortunately, I have come to understand that my current field of study is also related to Health care and working in the health environment which also makes me advantaged. I have also come to realize that my studies at Milton Keynes College is a foundation to studying a bachelor’s degree in nursing since it equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to study Mental Health Nursing. I have already gained some knowledge of biology and anatomy and the basic skills needed to be a competent nurse. Studying at Milton Keynes College has equipped me with teamwork skills where I can work as a team while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines. Also, it has taught me to be a determined person who can work independently where needed. Moreover, from life experience, I have learned organization skills. I have excellent computer skills and excellent ability to adjust my work and school life effectively.

Apart from academics and social skill, I like cycling, partying, football and barbecue. All these demonstrate my personality skills and abilities. Also as a health worker, I like giving help and volunteering. This course is a challenging field of the study field, but worth-attending. I am, therefore, looking forward to different professional and academic challenges during the study of this course. This challenging environment will help me acquire and develop relevant skills for the job market. Offered a chance, it is my dream and passion to change metal health care and contribute positively to a better caring world. Lastly, I am willing to contribute positively to your institution's football club.
