This critical incident analysis aims to evaluate critically an event or incident I had gone through during my placement at Whittington hospital as a ward befriender. This study will discuss the impact of this indecent on my learning process, professional and personal skill, performance and behaviour. Through analysing the event critically, this study is going to make comprehensive discussion on how the event had make potential changes in my perception, assumption, beliefs and values. In addition to this, the essay will also discuss the plans as well as strategies that I had developed throughout the placement in terms of shaping my skills and as well as my knowledge to deal with the issue that I had find out during the placement. In this essay, I am going to discuss that how I had used my past skills, in-depth knowledge and assumptions that I had gathered during the module in order to mitigate the issues associated with the event. This critical incident analysis will discuss the overall impact of the event in context of developing my new skills, enhancing in-depth knowledge on different situation in the organisation and develop useful learning. The critical analysis is going to discuss the strength and weakness that I had determined throughout placement in terms of shaping as well as developing my professional skills with modifying existing skills and gathering new skills. This analysis provides valuable psychology dissertation help by offering insights into the practical application of theoretical knowledge.
In this critical incident analysis, I will use the three important key elements such as What’, So What and Now What. These three elements assist me to make comprehensive discussion on the impact of this event on my professional and personal skills, my knowledge and perception. This essay focuses on discussing the issues, activities and experiences that are associated with the events and how these experiences have made lifetime impact on my skills, assumption and abilities, rather than prioritising the mere description of the event.
By using the first element ‘What”, I can describe the event that had come across during my placement at Whittington hospital as a ward befriender. Being a ward befriender, I used to visit critical and vulnerable patients the ward regularly and do small things for them to make them happy such as telling funny stories or making a cup of tea for them. One day when I had entered the ward, I noticed there was going huge argument and conflict between the healthcare manager and nurses regarding the negligence of maintaining proper information handling as well as delivery process in this ward. This event made me realise how important the clear communication and interaction is in the healthcare field to manage transparent information delivery system. Being a healthcare staff, I tried to mitigate the issue by communicating with my colleagues but there was no fruitful result. The event influenced my perception, assumption and thoughts regarding maintaining effective communication in the healthcare in terms of eliminating chances of any type of mis-communication and conflict. As stated by Fergusson et al. (2019), conflict and mismanagement of opinion is most of the times results from lack of communication between the subordinated healthcare staffs and healthcare authority. This event made me realise that being a healthcare staff I would always prioritise to maintain clear and transparent information delivery system through using clear interaction with my colleagues and senior healthcare professions such as healthcare mangers, doctors and senior healthcare executives. In addition to this, this event also made me understand that what types of communication can be relevant to particular situation. While evaluating the reason behind occurring this event I realised that it is important for a health care staff to have strong knowledge on maintaining polite, peaceful and smart interaction with colleagues, patients and higher healthcare officials in eliminating any chances of miscommunication. Here I realised that, being a ward befriender, I need to not only use verbal communication but also focus on using nonverbal and written communication on which I have poor knowledge. On the other hand, I also realised during eth event that, through face to face communication with the nurse and midwives of the CCU ward, the higher healthcare authority can assure them that they are going to appoint some new nurses in this ward to reduce their work pressure so none of them will be needed to do extra work.
Therefore, the first element ‘What’, assisted me to not only describe the event but also discussing eth event with representing what have learned and realised during the event.
Now, in the second element ‘So What’, I analyse the impact of the above-mentioned event on my learning, experiences, assumption, realisation and thought that assisted me to shape up my professional and personal skills. The event taught me that how dangerous may be the result of poor and lack of communication as well as interaction between the healthcare staffs and the care mange in Critical Care unit. As mentioned by Tanaka et al. (2018), CCU consist of patient with critical and complex health needs, that can only be met if the entire service delivery process is organised in systematic manner. Although the event is itself a serious issues for the nurses and the patients in that CCU wards, but it has assisted me to work on some of my professional and personal skills that I have learned my module, such as interpersonal skills, communication skills, interaction skills, analysing skills and judgemental skills. The event had intense impact on my perception, Sumption, ethical and moral values beliefs and perception, which not only compelled me to modify existing skills with time by also mad me to realise the importance of developing new skills in order to deal with different work situation in the near future. Throughout the event realised that, it is important for eth healthcare staffs, care manger, health professional and the other health care authority to maintain transparent information delivery system, which will be assisted them to shaper their opinion, issues, preferences and interest regarding the service delivery process.
The event taught time that how I can implement the verbal and written communication process in the future workplace to deal with any type of conflict and mismanagement within the workplace. As mentioned by Ryan et al. (2019), for eliminating chances of mis-communication, disagreement and opinion mismatch in healthcare, only verbal communication is not sufficient fie the staffs, rather that also need to use proper written as well as non-verbal communicate process that will enhance the usefulness of the entire interaction process. Through the event I had realised that although I have strong communication skill that I developed during the module, I also need to work on my non-verbal communication process and written communication skills, which will assist me in future workplace as a healthcare staff. In addition this the ethical and moral issues that are associated with the event such as lack of transparent communication between nurse and care mange and unequal distribution of work in the CCU wards, made me realised to focus on
understanding the ethical rules ad codes of conduct of workplace in which I am going to work in terms of complying with standard of work. As argued by Kovanović et al. (2019), sometimes understanding and gathering information about organisational rules and ethical values are not enough for staffs to improve the service delivery process, rather the staffs need to improve their own expertise in terms of complying with the work standard set by the healthcare authority. The event although itself was big issue the senior nurses and care manger in my team, it assisted me to understand how well-organised work process is important for dealing with critical and complex health needs of patients suffering from chronic health condition. Throughout the event, I analysed that how the conflict, mis-communication and disagreement among healthcare staffs, nurses and care manger in the CCU wards affect the quality and overall standard of the service delivery process which not only enhances health risk for patients but also interferes with the integrity as well as competence of each healthcare staffs. The event also impacts on my perception, assumption and thoughts by making me practical and straightforward towards any situation of event in professional field. The event impacted on my perception regarding facing any issues in workplace in such a manner that compelled me to analyse and evaluate any issues or official situation before taking an action. Throughout the event I had developed my abilities to make efface p face communication with higher healthcare authority as well as with the healthcare staffs by using proper reasons and justification in terms of establishing my viewpoint in front of them. As argued by Valbjørn (2015), face to face communication sometimes can not be developed by the healthcare staffs with the doctors and higher authorities as they both are busy in their daily schedule,, though which they cannot mange time to make the direct interaction, rather they use written communication process or only communication to share their decisions. The event made me realised the importance of written communication in the CCU, to communicate nit only with the patients who cannot speak, but also for the handicapped staffs who cannot speak or hear. In this context, I has faced difficulties in developed the writing skills I have poor knowledge on how to make a case study or a clinical; report in healthcare field. Here I had taken training from senior nurse I to improve my written communication skills which assisted me to make flawless medical documents such as clinical reposts, letters, applications, regular health updates of each patient and case study of critical patients with using simple English that can be understood by all the healthcare staffs as well as by health professionals. As argued by Ryan et al. (2019), written communication skills is not all-time effective for the healthcare staffs as well as managers in the CCU, as it will take more time as well as efforts of healthcare staffs, that is quite impossible in CCU ward in which nurses and care mangers are busy in their daily packed-up schedule. In this context, the event taught me the importance of analysing situation before using any types of communication to deal with the issues. For example, in terms of mitigating the conflict among nurses, care managers and hygienists I generally face to faced communication which I thought was more effective than written communication process to make et entire situation normal. On the other hand, while communicating with highly critical patients in CCU, I use the written and non-verbal communication as it can maintain silent and peaceful environment within the room. Therefore, I can say that the event assisted me to shape my existing skills that I gathered during module and develop new skills such as analysing skills, time management skills, written communication skills and non-verbal communication skills. In addition to this, through the event I had learned how I will use the skills in future workplace to comply with standard and codes of practices set by healthcare authority.
Through using the third element, ‘Now What’, I discuss that how I can implement and use the skills, abilities and knowledge that I had gathered through the event during the placement, in my future workplace The event assisted me to develop some new skills such as analysing skills, non-verbal and written communication skills, judgemental skills and time-management skill that I can use in future workplace to enhance the quality of me work as healthcare staff.
I can use the written communication skills in making clinical reports, patient’s case study, medical application, official document of regular tasks that are assigned to me and my team and clinical reports. As mentioned by Norman and Williams (2017), written communication process is one of the most important processes in healthcare which assist healthcare staffs to eliminate chances of conflict with higher healthcare authorities. The realisation that I had gained throughout the event regarding implementation of communication into workplace will assist me to determine the situation in my future workplace before selecting the type of communication that would be relevant with the situation. For example, while dealing with conflict and mis-management in the future workplace I will use the verbal and face-to-face communication process that makes me able to mitigate the issues which is the sources of this conflict. On the other hand, in terms of recording the overall health progress of patients I need to use written communication process, inn which, I would make report of patient’s improvement and regular medication as well as clinical techniques that are used by health professional as well as nurse. While shaping the written communication during the placement I had gathered enough knowledge ion using simple English and proper sentences in terms of making flawless clinical documents. This skill that I have gathered during dealing with the event, assisted me to make such document that can be understood by any healthcare staffs as well as the healthcare manager in my future workplace. According to (), written communication in the healthcare needs better knowledge on patient’s condition, healthcare rules and regulations that assist health staffs to make such a document that will meet the standard of clinical writing. In this context, the event assisted me to develop analysing ad reasoning skill that I can use in et future workplace to analyse as well as evaluate any situation and issues before making any interpretation or assumption on the situation. The analysing al so assisted me to understand that what strategies and plans would relevant with situation in mitigating the issues in the future workplace. As mentioned by Kovanović et al. (2019), only communication and interaction skills are not enough fur a healthcare staffs to develop strong career in future rather the staffs need to have developed ethical and moral values, proper assumptions, perception and decision-making skills. The event although itself was serious issues for the nurse and health staffs working in CCU wards, assisted me to understand the importance of maintaining ethical and moral values in the work process. This realisation will assist me to comply with ethical conducts and standard of care in future workplace that are importance in maintaining highly disciplined and well-organised healthcare system inn the workplace. Through shaping my existing skills such as communication interaction and interpersonal skills, I will be able to maintain clear and transparent interaction with care manger and my colleagues in future workplace which will assist me to eliminate chances of any type of conflict and miscommunication, finally, the event taught me how to develop instant tactics and strategies in dealing with the any type of situation in my future workplace.
From the above-mentioned critical indecent analysis, I can conclude that, critical analysis as well a evaluation of the event or incident during my placement assisted me to shape existing skills and develop new skills. Development of new skills assist person to deal with issues ion et workplace and mitigate them with using proper strategy. On the other hand, shaping existing skills improve the efficiency and expertise of person which are important in maintaining sustainability of quality and standard of work. In addition to this, the essay has concluded that through including the critical incident analysis, it is possible to reflect on strength and weakness of own personal and professional ability, that assist the person to improve the skills in terms of enhancing their professional development mand managing their performance.
