Semester Reflection Using Gibb's Model

Introduction

Through this report, it is possible for me to develop my reflection about the activities that I have done during the semester and what I have actual gained through learning and analysing the topics in the semester. In this regard, Gibb’s reflective model is utilised here for developing my understanding and reflect my own activities through the semesters. Through the model, it is also possible for me to share my experience and reflect on a particular event prominently which has been happened during the semester. Through this regard, how I have learned and improve my persona and professional skill has been discussed well where Gibb’s reflective model is helpful for me for successful self-evaluation and reflection.

Gibb’s reflective cycle (1988)

The model motivates me to reflect, own understanding and activities during my semester as well as about the phases of experience that I have gathered through the course. I try to express my feelings and activities as well as evaluate the situation for better understanding. In addition to the, the model helps to analyse the situation and develop proper conclusion as well as action plan for further personal and professional development (Husebø, O'Regan, and Nestel, 2015). Past experience of mine as well as future practice are also further discussed through this study. The model is also effective for developing a systematic thinking process for successful refection (Mann, and Walsh, 2017). Six main stages are such as description, feelings, evaluation, conclusion and action through which it is possible for me to present my situation that I have faced during my semester for describing the incidents of the classroom, conflicts between friends and develop effective action plan for further development (Mulder, 2018).

Journal Entry 1A: Description

During the first week of my semester, it has been seen that, two students are suffering for internal conflicts which can be resolved easily. One student entered in the classroom and noticed a chair left in the classroom. He did not ask for the chair to another student who sat beside the empty chair and holder it for his friend, which is the reason for starting the conflicts. The student asked her for the chair, but she replied aggressively that no it is her friend’s chair and she is already holding it so he cannot seat on that particular chair. Rude behaviour of her and arguments are the cause of the conflicts which leads to serous arguments. Finally, teacher has been arrived at the classroom and noticed the arguments. The girl has been asked the reason for such argument and she explained it and apologise to the teacher as well as was to each other. It is an embarrassing situation where she failed guilty for such rude behaviour and apologised to the teacher.

Feelings

During the situation, I have many emotions for the student who is my friend and I am very upset for my friend that he faced such embarrassing situation at the classroom. The situation does not suit their personality as it is only for the chair which is quite embarrassing in front of other students and the teacher at the classroom. Missing the lecture and creating such situation are the major consequences for which I get worried about. I also felt bad for the teacher as well and the teacher also shocked fir such situation where the conflicts arise only for the chair. It is my worst experience in the university life where I faced such embarrassing situation. They lost their image at the university and I also missed important information during the lecture which is essential for me for my personal career development and semesters. The positive thing that I have achieved is that the student has apologised which was necessary at that moment where he said sorry to his teacher and also the student who is my friend for such distraction and delayed in giving lecture in the classroom. I realised that saying sorry to the teacher and the student as well is the best way to make the situation calm and resolve the conflicts and it can be handled well where she apologised to her teacher.

Evaluation of the situation

I experienced such situation at the classroom at the university and I realised that Schon reflective model (1983) can be applied for successful evaluation of the situation. I have looked the theory and concept of self-evaluation for analysing my present situation for discussing the situation successfully. It can be stated that the student was not in good mood for which such disagreement has been happened and my friend needed to face such embarrassing situation for her. Another reason that I felt is that lack of communication which create miscommunication and misunderstanding among them and the situation happened in the classroom. Mood swing can be one of the major reasons for such incident where the student was not in a good mood to interact with others and the student may face difficulties in her personal life. Other is miscommunication where they could not interact with each other properly and lack of communication has created such situation. I have seen such embarrassing situation in front of other students and teacher a, but it can be stated that the student got the opportunity to say sorry to the teacher and also to the student with whom she misbehaved. The chance of apology and communication with the student with whom the other student misbehaved help the situation to be controlled with proper cooperation which leads to the chance of managing the conflicts at the classroom in the university.

Analysing the situation

Assessing the situation is necessary for summarising an analysing the situation at the classroom where the students face embarrassing situation and the prestige of another student has been hampered of such behaviour of the student. I have chosen Schon Reflecting Model (1983) as it is best suited for such situation. I realised that, he student did not think about the consequences of such behaviour in front of others and what actual happened next. I was feeling upset for my friend that he faced such embarrassing situation for which he also felt ashamed in front of teachers. The student misbehaved with him for a minor reason where she can reply to my friends in a polite way by sating the reason, but she did not. The theory helps me a lot to take time and evaluate the situation at my classroom where I found that the behaviour and mood swing of the student created such situation where my friend has suffered. It is necessary for the student to understand the environment of the classroom and manage her mood at that time in front of the teacher while the teacher gave notes and lectures at that time. It is necessary for all of the individuals to manage their behaviour with others and be polite for answering someone so that proper communication and cooperation can handle the situation.

Conclusion

It can be concluded that, the Schon Reflective Model and Gibb’s reflective Model are effective for my situation to discuss and evaluate the condition at the time in the classroom of the university. I try to evaluate the situation and try to find the reason behind her to create such embarrassing situation at the classroom. Clam ad cool Mond and polite behaviour can be helpful in such situation where the student most understand the situation at the classroom and behave formally with the student in front of the teacher, she needs to respect the teacher and concentrates in the lecture rather than such rude behaviour. The act ad feelings of the student are not good at that time and she must handle the situation calmly so that further conflicts can be controlled properly. The arguments must be avoided, and the person needs to find solutions in such situation which is good for both of the student to resolve the conflicts. Proper communication and cooperation between them can be helpful for handling the situation.

Plan of action

Action plan must be developed fir my future growth where I realised that replying back to other person is not the actual solution. In this regard, I need to develop solution to resolve the conflicts and respect others and understand their feelings at that time. Proper communication and polite behaviour can be helpful for handling such situation at the classroom. In addition to this, listening to other’s perspectives is also necessary, where I can acknowledge the feelings of others which is also effective for resolving the conflict in different situation. This is a regretting situation where it is necessary to apologise to the senior and resolve the conflicts so that it is possible to create suitable environment to study.

Kolb’s Learning cycle (1984)

The Kolb’s Learning cycle (1984) is an effective model for experimental learning style where there are four stages which are concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation and active experimental through which it is possible to review the experiences gathered during the class sessions and analyse the situation on the basis of knowledge and understanding (Kumar, 2016; Pianpeng, and Koraneekij, 2016). This cycle is helpful for understanding the experiences gathered through the session where the individuals analyse the present situation as well as predict future situations for understanding what actual will happen in near future. It is advantageous to learn more trough gathering real life experiences and reflect own understanding and views with conceptualising and testing the ideas that has been learnt through the sessions. Engaging in new experiences as well as observe ad reflect on the experience can also be posisbel through the Kolb’s Learning cycle (1984) where the learner is able to understand the present situation and analyse the experience that has been gathered through the sessions. Moreover, interpreting the experiences and active experimental activities by applying the knowledge and understanding in the real life can also be useful through this Kolb’s Learning cycle (1984) where the learner can predict the future situation and apply the past experience for better outcomes or managing the situation with proper knowledge and understanding (McKinney, 2017; Bass, Fenwickand Sidebotham, 2017).

Importance of Kolb’s Learning cycle (1984)

The Kolb’s Learning cycle (1984) is beneficial in this study where I try to include this model for reviewing my experiences that have been gathered through my semester (Botelho et al., 2016). Through this model, I am able to analyse my experience and imporve my understanding and knowledge of handling the situation in front of others at the class room. This model provides me a scope to improve my knowledge and learn through gathering experiences in the semesters.

Journal Entry 1B: Experience

I feel that my experience of EVRE and PPDI is effective to learn through experience where it would be helpful for my future and becoming successful in my professional career. I was confused about the process of EVRE and PPDI where I did not understand these two subjects and it was very difficult for me to gather experience and imporve my knowledge in these two fields of experiences which would deteriorates my experiences in my professional career. I felt that it is necessary to develop team dynamics for working as a group and complete the semester as a team where sharing the knowledge and experiences with each other is helpful for me to develop my understanding and experiences further which will provide me a scope to achieve success in my professional career. The teacher has assigned project to all the individuals and provide effective timing where the projects need to be done within a group involving with the peers and friends. Hereby, it is necessary for me to develop bonding and strong relationship in the group so that the members become cooperative and work as a team. It is very important for me to listen others and understand each other’s perspectives so that I can gather more experiences from others through sharing their views and decisions.

Reflection on the experience

Through Kolb’s Learning cycle (1984), it is possible to understand that learning through experience is good for the students through which they can imporve their understanding through gathering experience. In this case, I start working with the groups where I feel happy to work with others with cooperation and communication., it helps me to gather knowledge and skill by sharing their views ad each other’s perspectives. Sharing experience with each other is also helpful for me to improve my own under4stand and gaining deep insight in the subject area. Working in a teach is also beneficial for me to complete the project within the given period of time where I try to gather experience and it is very important activity in achieving future success in my professional career. Even looking at different models in class such as the Johari’s Window (1955), it is helpful for me to improve self-assessment where I utilise my experience and improve learning abilities which would be effective for me to work in a group for achieving the team easily.

Conceptualisation

Having ability to think creatively, making decisions differently and analysing tings in a different perspective will be helpful for me to other more experience and develop proper decision-making practice with creativity and innovation in my professional field. The whole experience, time management and group working practice will be helpful for my future success where I can utilise these experiences and I improve my working practice in future. I would try to put more ideas and work with others by sharing knowledge and skills with more cooperation and communication so that I could develop an effective team in future. I will prefer working with others and it will be beneficial for me to gather more experiences through interacting with others and developing effective decisions after critical analysis which in turn helps me to complete the projects within effective time and achieve success.

Planning

As my past experiences, I try to avoid any unnecessary circumstances or disagreements that may happen in my future work as well as I will concentrate on my work and responsibilities so that I can meet my working objectives and complete my task proficiently. I will plan to work with others for sharing knowledge and skills that would be helpful for me to gain more ideas and conduct more in-depth research and development fir future success. Maintaining patience and being calm during the situation as well as respecting others and cooperation with positive interaction will also be helpful for me to achieve success in my future professional career.

Conclusion

Throughout the experience, I can improve knowledge and development growth in my field of experience through sharing ideas and gathering more information from others through communication, gaining better insight and improving understanding on the subject can be possible with the help of the peers and friends where communication and discussion over the research topic will be beneficial for working as a team and archiving success. I will try to observe my problems during my work and share the situations with my peers and friends so that I will be able to resolve the issues and make effective decision after practical analysis of the situation.
